Fourth East Street Community

A woman looking at a map

Some call Jack London Square, others call it Produce and Waterfront. Names aside, Fourth Street East in Oakland CA is a bustling neighborhood filled with life and culture. It’s hard to imagine that this bustling area was once nothing more than a ferry stop.

Thanks to an influx in affordable housing, restaurants, and outdoor amenities, this locale is now a thriving metro area. If you’re wondering what there is to do in this neighborhood, you don’t have to look any further than just outside your front door. This is a go-to destination for bar hopping extravaganzas, live entertainment, and a place to sit down for dinner.

The Eats

Jack London is teeming with delicious eats around every corner. Take Haven, for example, which offers a menu filled with delectable comfort food. Their lounge serves up salads, small entrees, and house-made pastas that pair perfectly with their barrel aged wines. Top menu items include kung pao brussels sprouts, the Haven burger, and snake river beef bavette.

Chop Bar is another popular hangout. This gastropub serves food throughout the day and night along with wine on tap. You could grab coffee and polenta with eggs for brunch, or sit down for a delicious half-dozen serving of Miyagi oysters for dinner. This is also where you’ll find fresh caught fish from the bay.

If your tastes lie somewhere between Mediterranean, Mexican, and South American, then give Bocanova try. Their varied menu features something for everyone, meat lovers and vegetarians alike. This isn’t your run of the mill regional restaurant, either. Bacanova is comprised of a team of highly trained chefs who are guaranteed to excite your taste buds.

For those with strictly plant-based diets, Souley Vegan serves up the widest variety of veggie plates in all of Oakland. From southern fried tofu minis to okra gumbo and seitan casseroles, even carnivores come here for their creative dishes and lively atmosphere. 4th Street East has a little something for every appetite.

Enjoying a Drink

Jack London is on of Oakland’s “watering hole” neighborhoods. The area is home to Oakland’s oldest bar, Heinhold’s First and Last Chance Saloon, which opened its doors in 1883. Opened as the only place where s seaman could get their first drink on arrival and their last drink before departure, the building stands as a historic location and an excellent spot to grab a cold one.

Keeping with the Bay Area’s craft beer scene, Beer Revolution offers fifty rotating taps and hundreds of bottles daily. Each brew is hand selected, featuring an incredible variety of styles and flavors. This is an excellent place to meet friends, stop in after work, or enjoy the Sunday Beer & BBQ event.

If your taste palette is more suited to wine, then step into Encuentro for a high-class atmosphere and outstanding tapas. All of their wines are organic, sustainable, and domestic. You can also find local zinfandel and Rhone-style wines at Rosenblum Cellars, located directly next to the ferry terminal.

For a non-alcoholic alternative, you can find stellar coffee shops all over Jack London and the rest of the Oakland area. However, Blue Bottle is by far one of the best. You might have to wait in line for a simple cappuccino, but the flavors are exquisite.

Shopping Spree

4th Street East is brimming with an eclectic mix of bazaars and artisan stores that are sure to excite any shopaholic. Start with Jack of All Trades, a market that features works by local artists as well as wares from antique collectors. They even offer a DIY workshop to satisfy your crafty side.

Jack’s Night Market, a bazaar with local crafts and fruit purveyors, has live music playing on the third Friday of every month. Here you can find interactive art, magic shows, fortune telling, and fresh farmer’s market produce. There’s a little bit of everything involved at Jack’s Night market, and you never know just what to expect when you arrive.

Family owned and self-run small businesses also host events to draw in the locals. Peerless Coffee, for instance, often invites residents to taste their gourmet blends and buy their single origin coffee. Jack London is where you’ll find wares from the little guy. For premier shopping chains, you can always take the public transport just a few minutes north to the more business-oriented side of the city.

The Fun Never Ends

Fourth Street East’s Bay Area location offers plenty of fun on the water, such as kayaking or paddle boarding, but there’s even more to do on land than off of it. You could rent a ride from Bay Area Bikes and glide along the coast, challenge your friends to a game of bowling or billiards at Plank, or enjoy some live Jazz at Yoshi’s.

Friday nights offer Dancing Under the Stars, a free salsa, swing, and cha cha class followed by a dance party. There’s also picnicking to be done at Lake Merit, as well as the beautiful Bay trail to hike. The neighborhoods spontaneity always provides a unique experience for residents.
